Weather Update: Tropical Cyclone Alfred

03 Mar 2025 / Brisbane, Australia

Tropical Cyclone Alfred will continue moving southeast today, slightly away from the Queensland coast, before slowing down and turning westward towards the coast on Tuesday.

TC Alfred is currently a Category 1 cyclone but is expected to intensify to Category 2 tonight. It will likely maintain this intensity as it approaches the southeast Queensland coast late on Thursday.

Maritime Safety Queensland is working closely with the Port of Brisbane community to manage the weather impacts on large vessels, including cargo and cruise ships.

The main impact so far has been strong swells, affecting the safe boarding of marine pilots and vessel transits through the Moreton Bay entrance.

As of Sunday, inbound movements for large vessels have been suspended, with priority given to departures.

Departures are taking place today, with some individual movements assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Pilot transfers at Mooloolaba are limited to departures only, with operations restricted to daylight hours today and from 09:00 to 13:00 tomorrow (two hours either side of high tide). Pilot disembarkations are only permitted for vessels of 200m or more unless authorised by the Harbour Master.

The port may close on Thursday and Friday, and further updates will be provided.

Key measures in place:

  • Vessels alongside must deploy additional moorings.
  • Offshore anchors at FI berths must be walked back to the seabed.
  • All activity permits are revoked until further notice.
  • Outer and inner anchorages are closed.
  • Additional tugs are allocated, with no substitution for bow thrusters in vessel movements.

Swell heights are expected to increase significantly. A strong wind warning is in place for the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay today and tomorrow, with gale warnings issued for Wednesday.

A further update will be issued tomorrow.
