Weakened cyclone still bringing high winds

18 May 2021 / Gujarat, India

After hitting the Gujarat coast yesterday evening (17 May), Extremely Severe Cyclone Tauktae has weakened into a ‘Very Severe’ category even as it rages through southern Gujarat today.

More than 12 hours after making landfall, Tauktae continues to maintain a wind speed of 110-120km/hr gusting to 130 km /hr. Though the eye of the cyclone is slowly disintegrating, the storm has not significantly weakened yet.

The system is expected to weaken into the ‘Cyclonic Storm’ by the afternoon and further weaken into a depression by the end of the day.
