Warning issued for Typhoon Kong-Rey

Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration has issued an onshore typhoon warning for Typhoon Kong-Rey this morning (30 October).

According to the latest data, the system has intensified into a severe typhoon. It is currently centered in the sea southeast of Eluanbi and moving northwest. Its storm circle is gradually entering the Bashi Strait and will affect Hualien, Taitung, Pingtung and Hengchun.

WARNING AREAS
- On land: Hualien, Taitung, Pingtung, and Hengchun Peninsula should be on strict alert.
- At sea: Navigation and operating vessels in the Taiwan Strait, the eastern half of Taiwan, the Bashi Strait, and Dongsha Island should be on strict alert.

Long waves are likely to occur along the coasts of Taiwan and on Orchid Island, Green Island, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu. The wind and waves on all sea surfaces and the Bashi Channel will also gradually increase, with wave heights of 3 to 5 metres or more, especially in the east today. The wave height on the southeastern coast and Orchid Island can reach more than 6 metres.

There will be strong gusts of magnitude 11 to 12 on Orchid Island, Green Island, and Penghu today (30th). There will be strong gusts of magnitude 11 to 12 from Taoyuan to Yunlin and the open areas along the southeastern coast, Hengchun Peninsula, and Matsu. There are strong gusts up to level 10. There are also strong gusts in other open coastal areas and Kinmen.

The average radius of the typhoon in this warning is about 300 kilometres.

Each port authority will take preventive measures for port operations according to the alert level. So far, no news about the port closure has been received, but ships have been required to shift out for shelter, the anchorage area of each port must be clear, and no ships can anchor.
