Port updates

20 Dec 2023 / Tuticorin, India

The cyclonic circulation over Tamil Nadu's Comorin area has held on tighter than expected and will continue inducing severe precipitation over Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala.

Extremely heavy rainfall is expected to continue over southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala during the next 2-3 days. Red alert has been sounded in Tuticorin and neighbouring regions, predicting continued thunderstorms and rainfall.

Following the rains, Tuticorin's 1050-MW coal-based thermal plant has been inundated bringing power generation to a halt. Power generation in the Tuticorin plant is expected to be stalled for the next 15 days.

Cargo operations at the Tuticorin Port had come to a standstill since Sunday evening.

The intense weather in Tamil Nadu, along with parts of Kerala, is expected to subside from Wednesday (Dec 20). However, the road to recovery remains long, with the state confronting the dual challenges of cyclone aftermath and unprecedented rainfall.
