Tropical Storm Lionrock

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3, is in force [in Hong Kong]. This means that winds with mean speeds of 41-62 km per hour are expected.

At 11 a.m., Tropical Storm Lionrock was estimated to be about 620 km southwest of Hong Kong (near 17.8 degrees north 110.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move north at about 10 km per hour towards the vicinity of Hainan Island.

Under the combined effect of Lionrock and the northeast monsoon, winds are generally strong over the coast of southern China with occasional gales offshore and on high ground. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is expected to remain in force this afternoon today and overnight tonight.

Persistent and widespread heavy rain and squalls are affecting the coast of Guangdong. There are also rough seas with swells. Members of the public should stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports. Besides, storm surge induced by Lionrock and heavy rain may lead to flooding in low-lying areas. Members of the public should be on the alert, and take precautions against strong winds and flooding.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island and Tate's Cairn were 73 and 68 km per hour with maximum gusts 90 and 94 km per hour respectively.
