Tropical disturbances developing in the Atlantic

20 Aug 2020 / Bahamas

Three tropical disturbances are developing in the Atlantic, and one has a path aimed toward Florida. Two tropical disturbances in the Atlantic are given high chances of developing into tropical depressions, and one is forecast to move in the direction of Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center.

These tropical waves roll of the coast of Africa on average about every three or four days during this time of the year in August and into September, according to a meteorologist.

One of the tropical waves is a fast-moving system located over the eastern Caribbean, the hurricane center said. The other tropical wave was located about 1,000 miles east of the Windward Islands early Wednesday (19 August 2020), making an approach toward the boundary that divides the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The latter is likely to form into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours, according to the 8 a.m. (local time) public advisory.

Both disturbances are generating large areas of rain and clouds, and are expected to move generally west.

A third wave developed over east Africa late Tuesday (18 August 2020) into early Wednesday (19 August 2020).

According to the forecast, some development is possible this week. But conditions are far less conducive for cyclone development by early next week.

The wave located in the eastern Caribbean is expected to move slowly west toward Central America before making a slight turn to the northwest. It is likely to become a tropical depression late this week or this weekend when the system reaches the northwestern Caribbean, according to the advisory.

The wave located in the mid-Atlantic is projected to travel slightly northwest toward the Caribbean. It has become better organized since Sunday and is likely to become a tropical depression within a couple days while the system moves west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph, the hurricane center said.

However, it is still early and those forecasts could change.
