Tropical Cyclone Warning

03 Aug 2021 / Hong Kong

Strong Wind Signal No. 3 is in force. This means that winds with mean speeds of 41-62 km per hour are expected.

At 5 p.m., the tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea was estimated to be about 120 km south-southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.3 deg. N, 113.9 deg. E) and is forecast to move east slowly across the coastal waters of Guangdong.

According to the present forecast track, the tropical depression will be closest to Hong Kong overnight tonight (3 August), skirting at about 100 km to the south of the territory. Unless the tropical depression intensifies significantly and moves even closer to Hong Kong, the chance of gales generally over the territory is expected to be relatively low. The Strong Wind Signal No. 3 will remain in force tonight and for some time tomorrow morning.

The rainbands of the tropical depression will continue to bring showers and squalls to Hong Kong today and in the next few days. There will also be swells.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Ngong Ping and Cheung Chau were 58 and 47 km per hour with maximum gusts 74 and 55 km per hour respectively.
