Tropical Cyclone Alfred

28 Feb 2025 / Queensland, Australia

As Tropical Cyclone Alfred moves south, the Queensland region will be affected by gale force winds and large and destructive seas over the next few days.

Conditions will improve as the cyclone tracks further south, but gale force winds are expected until at least Monday (3 March).

In preparation, from 0001 hours local time tomorrow (1 March) until further notice, all vessels - whether alongside or at anchor - are to have their main engines at immediate notice for sea.

Vessels at anchor should have their second anchor ready to let go and ballast down.

Vessels alongside should lower their outboard anchor underfoot and run additional head and stern lines to the berth.

If there are continuous wind strengths of 40 knots or greater, ports in the region will be closed to large trade traffic.

At Abbot Point (NQXT) & Hay Point (HPCT & DBCT), coal terminals are currently scheduling & operating as normal. Based on the current forecast for Alfred, port/terminal operations are not expected to be disrupted.
