Trial of traffic duplication in Small Bitter Lakes (Canal South Section Project)

31 Dec 2024 / Suez Canal, Egypt

The Suez Canal Authority has announced the following the successful trial operation of duplication in the Small Bitter Lakes, transiting two vessels in the new waterway.

Part of the development project for the Canal’s southern sector), the trial saw two vessels transit through the new waterway following the completion of dredging works, from km 122 (Canal Marking) to km 132 (Canal Marking), amongst vessels of the south-bound convoy. It was in parallel with the transit of four vessels from the eastern lane, the original waterway.

Numerous measures were taken to ensure the success of the trial operation; from the installation of buoys and necessary navigational aids in the new waterway, in addition to assigning two escort tugboats for navigational security as well as a group of pilots to guide vessels. This followed inspection of the project site and conducting a trial maneuver of the safe transit at the Maritime Training and Simulation Academy.

The development project of the southern sector of the Canal in its two parts is deemed as a major qualitative leap that will contribute to enhancing the Canal’s navigational security and reduce the impact of both water and wind currents on the transiting vessels.

It will also bring navigational advantages by increasing the length of the duplication by 10 km to be added to the New Suez Canal (now 82 km instead of 72 km). This will boost the Canal’s accommodation capacity by 6-8 additional vessels daily and improve its ability to handle potential emergencies.

Directives have been issued directives on the joint coordination between the Suez Canal Authority’s Transit Department and the Egyptian Navy Hydrographic Dept (ENHD) to issue new navigational charts that will incorporate the new 10 km long duplicated part from km. 122 (Canal Marking) to km.132 (Canal Marking) in the Small Bitter Lakes area.

Actual operation of the duplicated section will take place once the new navigational charts are issued in coordination with Egyptian Navy Hydrographic Department (ENHD) of the Armed Forces.
