Temporary establishment of acoustic doppler current profilers at Hei Ling Chau Typhoon Shelter

12 Jul 2024 / Hong Kong

For approximately five months, acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCPs) will be temporarily established on the seabed in the following locations (WGS 84 Datum):
(A) 22° 14.832’N / 114° 01.989’E
(B) 22° 14.739’N / 114° 02.064’E

The ADCP is an acoustic recording instrument for collecting wave and current data. It will be fixed to a trawl resistant bottom mounting frames with a height of about 0.4 metre and a base of 1.4 metre by 1.4 metre on the seabed. Yellow marker buoys fitted with yellow flashing lights will be laid to mark the locations of the ADCPs.

Laying of the ADCPs will be carried out by a work boat. A working area of approximately 50 metres around the work boat will be established. Yellow marker buoys fitted with yellow flashing lights will be laid to mark the positions of the anchors extending from the work boat. Vessel engaged in the works will display signals as prescribed in international and local regulations.

Regular diving operations for inspecting and retrieving data from the ADCPs will be carried out by a work boat at the above locations from time to time. The hours of work will be from 0800 to 1800 hours. No works will be carried out on Sundays.

Vessels navigating in the vicinity should proceed with caution and keep clear of the locations at slow speed, bearing in mind that there are divers working in the locations.
