Suspension of traffic

28 Mar 2022 / Bosphorus, Turkey

Vessel traffic in the Bosphorus Strait was suspended from 09.24 to 11.30 hours local time and again from 12.10 today (28 March) due to dense fog.

[UPDATE: Traffic scheduled to resume for northbound vessels from 20:30 hours local time.]

This follows an incident on Saturday, 26 March, when traffic was temporarily halted after an unidentified object suspected to be a sea mine was reported at the northern side of the Bosphorus Strait close to the anchorage areas. Vessels waiting at Istanbul Northern Anchorage Area were advised to leave the anchorage areas and navigation with caution.

The Ministry of Defence later announced that the object had been identified as old type sea mine and had been disarmed by Special Forces and traffic resumed. Meanwhile, Coastal Safety and Naval Forces continued patrols in the area.
