12 Oct 2021 / Hong Kong
The Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory today (12 October) states that at 7am local time, Severe Tropical Storm Kompasu was estimated to be about 650 km southeast of Hong Kong (near 18.8 deg. N, 119.2 deg. E) and forecast to move west at about 25 km per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea.
The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force, which means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 km per hour are expected.
With the combined effect of Kompasu and the northeast monsoon, strong winds prevail over southern China.
As Kompasu gradually edges closer to the coast of Guangdong and intensifies, its outer rainbands will bring squally showers to Hong Kong tonight. Local winds are also expected to strengthen further.
Storm surge induced by Kompasu and heavy rain may lead to flooding in low-lying areas. Seas will be rough with swells.
