Strike announced

07 Mar 2025 / Kiel Canal, Germany

The German labour union ver.di has given notice of a planned strike in the Kiel-Canal from 21:00 hours on Monday 10 March until 22:00 hours on Thursday 13 March.

When the strike commences, inbound traffic into the Kiel Canal will be stopped. Only outbound vessels will be served to proceed towards port of destination. When the Canal is empty, the locks in Kiel and Brunsbuettel will be closed and will remain closed for safety reasons until the strike ends.

After reopening, major delays should be expected for all west- and eastbound traffic heading towards the Kiel Canal. The period of congestion cannot be predicted, as it will depend on the volume of ships waiting to transit.
