Severe Tropical Storm Toraji, Standby Signal in force

12 Nov 2024 / Hong Kong

Standby Signal No. 1 is in force for Hong Kong, in anticipation of the possible impact of Severe Tropical Storm Toraji.

At 08:00 today (12 November), Toraji was estimated to be about 630 km southeast of Hong Kong (near 18.6 deg. N, 118.7 deg. E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 15 km per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea.

In the past few hours, it has moved northwest steadily. According to the present forecast track, Toraji will still maintain a distance of about 400 km or above from Hong Kong for most of today. The associated strong winds will not affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary yet.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force at least until midnight.

As Toraji edges closer to the coast of southern China, under its combined effect with the northeast monsoon, winds over the region will strengthen gradually. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 tomorrow (13 November).

Toraji is expected to skirt around 200 km to the south of the territory on Thursday morning (14 November). Depending on its intensity of at that time, the distance of its associated gale winds from the Pearl River Estuary and the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals.
