Severe Tropical Cylone Errol

16 Apr 2025 / Port Kembla, Australia

Following the intensification of Severe Tropical Errol (29U) into a Category 3 cyclone, the port of Port Hedland has activated its cyclone response procedure.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology update issued at 1100 hours local time today (16 April), conditions are favourable for further intensification, potentially peaking at Category 4 within the next 24 hours.

Errol is moving westwards but is expected to recurve towards the southeast on Thursday as an upper trough captures it and moves it to the southeast. Increasing wind shear and dry air associated with the upper trough is likely to affect its intensity. It is forecast to drop to a category 1 or below tropical cyclone intensity overnight on Friday or Saturday morning, as it nears the west Kimberley coast.

Port Hedland is currently at Cyclone Stage 1 - Monitor. This involves monitoring the weather system and assessing its likely path and potential impact on the port.

Vessel Masters shall ensure:
- Vessel engines and machinery are fully operational.
- Vessel stability, trim, and propeller immersion are appropriate.
- Vessel manning, stores and bunkers are adequate for departure.
- Preparations are made in accordance with their respective cyclone response plan.

Terminal/berth operators shall ensure that the latest cyclone forecasts are taken into account when planning operations over the coming days.

Shipping operations will continue as planned. Adjustments will be made based on prevalent and expected weather conditions associated with the tropical system.
