Severe cyclonic storm due to cross coast

Cyclonic Storm Dana is likely to cross the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal as a severe cyclonic storm during 24-25 October with wind speeds of 100-110 km per hour, gusting 120 km per hour.

The deep depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal moved west-northwest at a speed of 18 km/h and intensified into cyclonic storm 'Dana', which was centred about 560 km southeast of Paradip and 630 km south-southeast of Sagar Island at 0530 AM.

It is likely to move northwest and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal by early morning on 24 October, crossing the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of 24 October to the morning of 25 October. Wind speeds are expected to reach 100-110 km/h, gusting to 120 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to bring significant rainfall to Odisha, predicting light to moderate rain at most locations, with heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) in isolated areas. On 24 & 25 October, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several places, with isolated areas receiving extremely heavy rainfall (over 21 cm).

Squally winds are likely to begin this evening. Wind speeds will gradually increase to 80 km/h by the morning of 24 October and could reach 120 km/h from the night of 24 October until the morning of 25 October, before decreasing gradually thereafter.

PORT UPDATES

  • PARADIP: All vessels in port limits to shift to safe sea by midday today. Cargo operations on vessels have been suspended.
  • DHAMRA: Vessels at berth/anchorage shifted to safe sea area. Port operations including truck and rake movements suspended.
  • HALDIA: Cargo operations on vessels alongside continue as normal. Midnight sailings from the docks cancelled. Inward movements at oil jetties suspended for 23 & 24 October. Vessels at Sandheads Anchorage moved to a safer location to wait out the storm.
