Sea Robbery in Philip Channel

11 Aug 2023 / Philip Channel

Three theft, robbery and piracy at sea (TRAPs) had occurred in the Philip Channel.The incidents took place between 2150H (8th Aug) and 0355H (9th Aug), when it is difficult to spot suspicious activities due to the moon phase during this period. It is likely that the same group of perpetrators were involved in all three incidents, based on the proximity of incident locations, time intervals and number of perpetrators observed (3 to 4 pax).

Based on the projected Aug 2023 moon phase, the IFC predicts perpetrators to continue opportunistic boarding attempts from 10th to 20th Aug due to minimal moon illumination, in order to avoid detection. While IFC continues to share information and work with regional authorities to strengthen enforcement efforts in the Phillip Channel, members are advised to remain vigilant while navigating in the area.

Members and transiting vessels are strongly encouraged to:

  • Heighten vigilance particularly when transiting the Phillip Channel in hours of darkness;
  • Immediately report to the IFC or local authorities upon sighting of suspicious activities or perpetrators onboard;
  • Adopt Ship Protection Measures recommended in the Regional Guide 2 to Counter Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia;
  • Participate in Voluntary Community Reporting as depicted in 4th Edition MARSEC Charts Q6112 and Q6113.
