River closure for race

12 Jul 2023 / River Thames/London, United Kingdom

Mariners are advised that on Wednesday 19 July, the Doggett’s Coat and Badge Wager will take place between London Bridge and Albert Bridge. It is expected that 3 single sculls will compete.

Race official craft, safety boats and passenger vessels are expected to accompany the event, together with additional rowing vessels in a procession.

In order for this event to take place safely, the Thames will be Closed to Navigation between Tower Bridge and Battersea Bridge from 1100 until the completion of the race. The race will commence at 1130 and is expected to conclude by 1215.

The river closure will be indicated by PLA Harbour Service Launches, callsign prefix “Thames Patrol”, stationed at the upriver and downriver boundaries of the closure area and displaying flashing blue lights. Once the event is underway, the river will be progressively reopened to traffic behind the participating vessels, as directed by the attending Harbour Service Launch.

Except for vessels participating in the Doggett’s event, no vessel is to enter, or be underway within, the river closure area described above while the closure is in force.

Further details will be broadcast, as needed, by London VTS on VHF Channel 14.
