Ports reopened

23 Feb 2024 / Dampier & Port Hedland, Australia

The ports of Dampier and Port Hedland are at Cyclone Alert – Final Update.

At Dampier, anchorages opened with caution from 15:00 hours local time and all terminals from 18:00 hours local time. Vessels secured to moorings are clear to resume normal operations since 10:00LT.

At Port Hedland weather conditions at the inner anchorage are being monitored, and the inbound movement of vessels will begin today as scheduled. All terminals and port services can commence mobilisation and removal of securing as per their Cyclone Response Plans.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) update issued at 08:00 today (23 February), ex-TC Lincoln is now located well north of the central Pilbara coast, moving west southwest. It has been slowly developing but remains below tropical cyclone intensity. It is expected to continue to move west southwest then turn to the southwest this evening and then to the south on Saturday. With continued development it may reach category 2 intensity on Saturday morning.

The system will most likely cross the coast during Saturday along the northern Gascoyne coast. The most recent guidance reduces the risk of a period of rapid intensification into a severe tropical cyclone, but this scenario cannot still be ruled out for tonight and into early Saturday.
