Ports prepare for cyclone

06 Mar 2025 / Queensland, Australia – Ports prepare for cyclone

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is likely to maintain Category 2 intensity as it approaches the southeast Queensland coast tomorrow morning (7 March).

In preparation, Maritime Safety Queensland is working with the Port of Brisbane community to manage the weather impacts for large vessels, including cargo ships and cruise ships.

At this stage, the main impact has been high powerful swell impacting the ability for marine pilots safely board ships and then transit the entrance to Moreton Bay.

However, Alfred is also expected to bring potentially destructive winds, heavy rain, swell and flooding as it approaches the southeast Queensland coast.

A Tropical Cyclone Emergency Warning “Seek / Take Shelter Now” alert yesterday (5 March) for all waterways from Double Island Point to Point Danger.

The Regional Harbour Master has closed the Brisbane and Southport Pilotage Areas, associated waterways, rivers, marinas, buoy mooring grids and anchorages to all vessels. Vessels are not to leave their moorings or marina berths until the official all clear is given.

The Bureau of Metrology have issued a Storm Force Wind Warning for Sunshine Coast Waters, Moreton Bay and Gold Coast Waters.

Port operations will be suspended today and tomorrow. Until shipping is scheduled to resume, ships should remain outside or Queensland State waters until advised by VTS.

The resumption of shipping operations will be based on favourable weather and sea conditions, as well as a review of navigable channels within the Brisbane Pilotage area.
