Ports prepare for Cristobal

05 Jun 2020 / United States

As Tropical System Cristobal approaches the US coast, several Gulf ports are preparing for its possible impact.

At 20.00 CDT yesterday (4 June), the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port, Port Arthur, set Port Condition WHISKEY in anticipation of the arrival of tropical storm force winds of 39mph within 72 hours.

While the port has increased its readiness for heavy weather, it is currently open to all commercial traffic and all cargo operations may continue. Maritime interests should monitor the storm track closely and prepare for the setting of Port Condition X-RAY.

Port Condition WHISKEY was also set at New Orleans at 1600 local time yesterday, in accordance with the Maritime Hurricane Contingency Port Plan (MHCPP).

All self-propelled ocean-going vessels over 500 Gross Tons, all oceangoing barges, and their supporting tugs within the COTP Zone are required to submit a Remaining In Port Checklist (RIPC) in accordance with the MHCPP prior to 1600 local time today (5 June). Vessels are only required to submit the first page of the RIPC reporting tool, Enclosure 2 of the MHCPP, found on Homeport at

https://homeport.uscg.mil/Lists/Content/Attachments/63442/Remaining in Port reporting tool.pdf

Vessels are not required to submit additional mooring plans.

Port conditions may quickly change as the situation develops. Vessels are urged to review their hurricane plans, take action to minimise risk, and be prepared to evacuate, if necessary.
