The ports of Ashburton, Cape Preston West, Dampier, Port Hedland and Varanus Island are at Cyclone Alert Stage 2 – Prepare as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Lincoln (07U) moves west offshore.
Vessel Masters shall ensure:
- Vessel engines and machinery are fully operational.
- Vessel stability, trim, and propeller immersion are appropriate.
- Vessel manning, stores and bunkers are adequate for departure.
- Preparations are made in accordance with their respective cyclone response plan.
Terminal/berth operators are to ensure that:
- The latest cyclone forecasts are taken into account when planning operations over the coming days.
- The response plan accounts for time required for vessels to clear the port and the approaching tropical system safely.
As per the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) update issued at 0800 hours local time today (21 February), ex-Tropical Cyclone Lincoln (07U) is located near the west Kimberley coast and is moving west offshore. Once offshore, it is expected to move towards the west-southwest on Thursday and slowly strengthen, with development into a tropical cyclone expected on Friday.
Later on Friday Lincoln is likely to turn towards the southwest and approach the west Pilbara coast, possibly as a category 2 tropical cyclone. It is expected to turn south on Saturday and cross the west Pilbara coast, most likely to the west of Onslow.
There remains a small risk that it strengthens further to become a severe tropical cyclone prior to when it crosses the coast.
Gales may develop on the southeast quadrant early Friday morning. The chance of gales developing along the Pilbara coast remains a risk west of Roebourne, however the Karratha area is more likely to receive peripheral gales during Friday morning IF the system takes a track more south than expected.
