Port workers join strike

16 Feb 2024 / Tuticorin, India

The port workers’ union at Tuticorin joined the nationwide strike called for today, from 0600 hours local time.

Strikers gathered in front of the port’s main gate raising slogans and blocking other workers from entering the premises. Truck movements to/from port have come to a standstill.

Inward/outward vessel movements, however, remain normal.

Discharge operations at mechanical berths were resumed by 0825 hours, but discharge operations on working vessels at the manual berth have been suspended due to lack of labour.

Meanwhile, the strike has not affected any other Indian ports, where operations continue as normal.
