Planned protest at port

14 Nov 2024 / Newcastle, Australia

Climate change action group Rising Tide will stage a mass protest at the world’s largest coal port, Newcastle, from 07:00 on 18 November (set-up) through to 17:00 hours on 27 November (off-site).

Newcastle City Council has decided to permit the event application/concerts to take place and given them access to designated areas around Horseshoe Beach (within the port) and Camp Shortland for the establishment of a concert/food vending venue. The exact format of the protest actions is yet to be determined.

Newcastle’s Harbour Master will have to manage shipping movements over a potential 10-day window where protest activity on the water could occur at any time.

A forced closure of the port at some point can be anticipated, which will create a shipping backlog. Timings for the proposed vessel arrival(s) on 23-25 November is likely to be subject to port schedule backlogs.

There will also be a rail network shutdown from 19 to 22 November. However, this will not necessarily affect shipping movements as vessels load from prebuilt stockpiles.
