New P&I cover certificate requirement

16 Jan 2025 / Turkey

Turkey’s General Directorate of Maritime Affairs has announced new conditions of P&I cover certificate requirement for vessels in Turkish Straits and ports.

P&I insurance is required to cover responsibilities in case of damages to third parties, the environment or cargo during operations, as well as penalties. Ships flying the Turkish flag and all ships of 300 GT and above arriving or departing from Turkish port facilities are obliged to have insurance. All vessels in the Turkish Straits carrying dangerous cargo, 300 GT and above, and towing vessels must have a valid P&I policy.

In recent maritime accidents, insurance policies submitted were not undertaken by the relevant insurance company after the accident and the policies were claimed to be recently cancelled.

In order for an insurer other than companies included in the list of credible companies to be an insurance organisation registered in Turkey, the insurer must make certain submissions to the Administration. Insurance organisations found to meet the conditions will be registered in the system and announced on the website of the General Directorate under the name “The List of Insurance Organisations Registered in Our Ministry’s LTP and LYBS”.

Insurance organisations that wish to be included in the list are required to make the necessary application until 20 February 2025.
