Lock out of order

26 Oct 2023 / Kiel Canal, Germany

The Kiel Canal authorities have announced that due to a slight collision to the lock gate, the new Big South Lock at Holtenau had to be taken out of service for safety reasons.

Investigation for maintenance started at daybreak/daylight, and the authorities are positive to solve the problem today (26 October), bringing the lock back into service as fast as possible.

Due to high volumes of west- and eastbound traffic heading towards the Kiel Canal, approaching vessels are facing a waiting time up to 10 hours for entering from Baltic Sea.

Outbound traffic leaving the Kiel Canal into Baltic Sea has the right of way and is therefore only delayed with minimum impact.
