Lock chamber to close for maintenance

17 Apr 2025 / Kiel Canal, Germany

The Kiel Canal authorities have announced that the Big North Lock chamber at Brunsbuettel will be taken out of operation from 12 June to 1 August, due to maintenance works.

Additionally due to the limited capacity of the Big Locks, vessels (traffic group 3 or higher) entering the locks first - and those in the same traffic groups entering the locks behind the first one and running risk of hitting the lock gate directly - must accept tug assistance during this period.

Tug assistance will not be compulsory for vessels in traffic group 3 or higher entering the locks with no risk of hitting the lock gate directly.
