Isaias inland but still a tropical storm

04 Aug 2020 / US East Coast, United States

The center of Tropical Storm Isaias is inland over eastern Virginia. Initial intensity remains at 60 knots and moving quickly north northeastward at about 29 knots.

Due to land interaction with the eastern US, weakening will occur today (4 August) and Wednesday. However, the interaction with a strong upper level may only allow for a slow weakening trend over the next 12 hours. A faster weakening trend should begin by this evening. It is forecast to remain a tropical storm for the next 12 hours or so before it begins to transition to a post tropical cyclone as it reaches higher latitudes and interacts with a non tropical low pressure area.

Southwesterly flow associated with an upper level trough to the west will cause Isaias to move quickly to the north northeast over the next 24 hours. Thereafter, its forward speed is likely to slow as it interacts with a larger non tropical low pressure system. This latest forecast track has the center of Isaias moving from the Mid Atlantic today and into the Northeast US by tonight, eventually reaching eastern Canada on Wednesday as a weakening post tropical low.

The ports of Baltimore, Norfolk, Philadelphia and Wilmington are closed and at Port Status Zulu due to Isaias.
