Incident in Ship Channel

Around 8pm yesterday evening (16 January), a tow maneuvering 2 barges off Texas International Terminals struck at least one power pole near the Pelican Island Bridge, causing the pole(s) to collapse and putting live wires into the water. Nearby towboats quickly moved to assist.

The barges were secured against the bridge fenders but the bridge was not impacted. The waterway in that area is closed until further notice.

There have been no reports of pollution or injury.

The power line(s) that are in the water have been de-energized.

Centerpoint Energy has advised they are sending a boat to remove all equipment from the water and make temporary repairs…

…Texas International Terminals is without power, and is closed to all vessel traffic until further notice.

Movement to/from the sulfur terminal is also suspended until further notice.

The Pelican Island Bridge remains open to vehicular traffic; closed to vessels.

Other vessels on the waterway are not affected…
