Impact of national strike on ports

29 Mar 2025 / Belgium

The Belgian trade unions ABVV and ACV are organising a general strike on Monday (31 March).

At the country’s three ports - Antwerp, Ghent, Zeebrugge - short work stoppages for consultation with the unions are expected at major terminals, ranging from half an hour to an hour. At this time, no other actions by port workers are known.

It is not yet clear what potential actions will be taken players in the nautical chain (such as pilots, lock operators, radar stations, and fleet services), but disruptions are expected from 7:00pm on Sunday 30 March until 7am on Tuesday 1 April. It is expected that there will be little movement in the ports.

Employees of customs and other government services are not required to announce in advance whether they will participate in the strike. There are indications that disruptions can be expected for physical inspections at the Border Inspection Post Left Bank (GIP LO). Physical inspections will likely not be carried out.

GIP LO will remain open for FASFC (Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain) inspections until further notice.

The scanning service is also operational until further notice. However, if a "scan only" selection results in a suspicious or non-compliant scan image, it cannot be guaranteed that a physical inspection at GIP LO will take place on Monday. If physical inspections are indeed not possible, then, as was the case on February 13, only containers for FASFC inspections and "scan only" selections will be allowed on-site.

Filter blockades at Scheldelaan and Waaslandhaven Zuid cannot be ruled out.
