Hurricane Gaemi update (24 July 2024)

Due to the anticipated impact of Hurricane Gaemi, the Taiwan government has announced that all businesses are closed for one day today (24 July).

The centre is currently in the sea southeast of Yilan, moving northwest and west. Its storm circle has entered the eastern half of Taiwan, north of Taichung and south of Chiayi, posing a threat to various parts of Taiwan, Penghu and Matsu. Wind and rain are gradually intensifying in various places and the intensity of this typhoon is expected to increase slightly.

All regions in Taiwan, Penghu and Matsu should be on strict alert and beware of strong winds and heavy rains.

Vessels sailing and operating in the sea near Taiwan and in the Bashi Channel should be on strict alert.

Impact on ports

  • Kaohsiung:
    According to the Kaohsiung VTS announcement, the current average wind strength has reached level 7 or above. Inward/outward vessel operations have been suspended from 0950 hours local time at the North Entrance. At the South Entrance, only outbound vessel movements are allowed as inbound operations were suspended at 0950 hours.

  • Taichung:
    The wind force at the North Breakwater of Taichung Harbor has reached the control standard (Beaufort Wind Scale 8, 17.2~20.7 m/s). Ships entering and exiting the port suspended from 10:00 today.

  • Keelung:
    Port closed and all inward/outward operations suspended at 2300 hours local time last night (23 July).

  • Taipei:
    Port closed and all inward/outward operations suspended at 0000 hours local time today.

  • Mai-Liao:
    All vessels completed shifting/departure out of the port for shelter before 0400 hours local time today. All inward/outward operation are currently suspended.

  • An-Ping:
    The average wind force at An-Ping port has reached level 7 and lasted for 60 minutes. Inward/outward operations suspended from 1040 hours local time today.
