05 Aug 2024 / Florida, United States
The Port of Tampa has been closed and Savannah has started to increase its storm watch ahead of Tropical Storm Debby making landfall north as a Category 1 Hurricane.
Gale to storm force winds are expected along the majority of Florida's Gulf of Mexico coastline as Debby tracks northward. Inundation from 6-10 feet will be possible between the Ochlockonee River southeastward to the Suwannee River. Storm surge of 3-7 feet will be possible from the Suwannee River southward to Tampa Bay as the right front quadrant of Debby impacts the western Florida Peninsula. Rainfall of 3-7 inches will be expected across a wide are of Florida, with localized amounts from 7-14 inches (perhaps even higher) likely in areas impacted by the worse storm surge.
UPDATE:
Debby made landfall around Florida’s Big Bend as a Category 1 hurricane but has since been downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall. The storm is expected to cut across Florida and then shift north after hitting the Atlantic and coming ashore again around Charleston.
