High water levels expected to force lock closures

20 Oct 2023 / Kiel Canal, Germany

Kiel Canal authorities have announced that, due to expected extraordinary high water levels, closure of Kiel-Holtenau locks will become necessary and likely to cause major congestion and delays for all west- and east-bound traffic.

Lock gates cannot be operated at a water level of 1,50m or more above normal. Water levels of 2,00m and more are expected in the next 48 hours.

The locks will be closed at short notice, therefore it is not possible to predict re-opening or period of closure.
