The United Nations has called for urgent aid to fight COVID-19 in Yemen, where it says the health care system has “in effect collapsed”.
According to Médecins Sans Frontières, which is running a COVID-19 quarantine and treatment center in Aden, the mortality rate in the city is similar to that at ICU centres in Europe, but deaths are increasing daily.
Aden was already struggling with a healthcare system that had collapsed after five years of war before COVID-19. Diseases such as malaria, dengue and chikungunya are also endemic to the city.
Nonetheless, the ports of Aden, Rudhum, Mukalla, Ash Shihr, Nishtun, Hodeidah and Saleef are operating as normal. The ports of Balhaf, Mukha and Ras Isa remain closed.
