20 Dec 2021 / Karaikal, India
During the ongoing North East Monsoon, [Karaikal] port has faced back to back low pressures with torrential rains for a period of about 2 weeks. These torrential rains have caused flooding in and around Karaikal area, due to which both the rivers on either side of the port have had very heavy outflow into the sea, bringing with them a lot of silt, thereby resulting in heavy siltation in the channel.
The maximum permissible draft at Karaikal Port has been revised to 13.5 Mts until further notice.
Further, the cyclonic circulation almost stationary near Sri Lanka has severely affected the Port of Karaikal. The port has been experiencing very strong winds (upwards of 25 knots), very rough seas with heavy swell (upwards of 2.5 mts) for the last 4 days.
All marine operations have been very severely and adversely affected and this constitutes a Force Majeure event and Force Majeure has been declared at Karaikal Port from 14th Dec 2021 @ 0000 Hrs.
