FNQ (Cairns & Mourilyan) Emergency Towage Exercise

16 Aug 2023 / Far North Queensland, Australia

As part of Svitzer Australia's ongoing commitment to safety and ensuring they meet their obligations to provide emergency response capability out of Far North Queensland, they will be undergoing emergency response training on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 August 2023. It is a mandatory requirement as part of providing Emergency Towage Contract (ETC) responsibilities to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

Harbour towage availability will be impacted during this time. Svitzer is required to test their equipment, crew and capability and to simulate a live, fully-manned exercise with a recovery tug and another tug acting as a ‘dead ship’ in and around the port area.

The training obligations and live simulation exercise means that for periods of time from 07:00 Tuesday 29 August to 07:00 Thursday 31 August, Svitzer’s harbour towage availability may be limited to 1 tug (and corresponding crew allocations).

While Svitzer will work to minimise impacts as much as possible, some disruptions may be unavoidable for any late movement or booking requests for harbour towage. Svitzer is currently engaging with key port stakeholders regarding the above requirement and associated harbour towage impacts.

All shipping providers and agents are advised to plan related movements in advance as much as practical.
