Deep depression set to evolve into cyclone

30 Aug 2024 / Gujarat, India

In a rare meteorological occurrence, the current deep depression situated over the Gujarat coast is gearing up for a journey westward into the Arabian Sea, where it is expected to evolve into a cyclone today (30 August).

It is only the fourth time in the last 80 years where a weather system active on land transitions to a cyclone upon reaching the sea.

The deep depression is likely to move nearly westwards into northeast Arabian sea and intensify into a cyclonic storm and move west-north westwards away from Indian coast. It will be called Cyclone Asna when it intensifies into a cyclonic storm.

Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Saurashtra-Kachchh region in Gujarat yesterday, and the region is likely to witness moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thundershowers today, with extremely heavy rainfall for Saurashtra and Kutch regions.
