Cyclonic Storm 'Michaung' has moved northwestwards and at at 0530 hours today (4 December) was located at about 110km east-northeast of Chennai, 190km southeast of Nellore, 210km northeast of Puducherry, 310km south-southeast of Bapatla and 330 km southeast of Machilipatnam.
It is likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm, expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh with winds that could pack speeds of up to 100 kmph tomorrow.
Heavy rain and stong winds will continue over Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts until tonight. A heavy to very heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today. The storm could also result in heavy rains in most parts of southern Odisha and coastal region of the state.
Updates for affected ports are as follows:
KAKINADA:
Inward movements were suspended from 1700 hours on 2 December and working vessels shifted to anchorage at 1410 hours on 3 December. Presently raining heavily with channel current getting stronger with wind speed about 40 N and 4-5 M swell at Kakinada anchorage.
Port hoisted Signal No. 6 at 0900 hours today.
GANGAVARAM:
Cargo operations/vessel movements continue normal. Storm Flag No.2 hoisted.
VIZAG:
Port has suspended inward movements at both inner and outer harbour berths. Vessels at berths continue cargo operations without stoppages.
Storm Flag No.2 hoisted.
KRISHNAPATANAM:
Port operations remain suspended, likely to resume by 5 December once weather conditions improve.
Raining very heavily for the last 12 hours.
The entire navigation channel in port is full of flood water and the estimated velocity of the current is about 8 knots.
Sea swell is about 5 M and the visibility is very poor. Wind speed is above 40 knots.
Vessels at mechanical berths remain idle without cargo operations.
Danger signal (DS-VII) kept hoisted.
CHENNAI/ENNORE:
Vessels shifted to safe anchorage yesterday from 1530 hours onwards. Vessels at outer anchorage sailed out to avoid cyclone.
PARADIP:
Shipping operations continue as usual.
