Cyclone Mandous intensifies over Bay of Bengal

According to the India Metereological Department, Cyclone Mandous lay centred over southwest Bay of Bengal at 05:30 am IST this morning — about 330 km east-northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 500 km east-southeast of Karaikal and 580 km southeast of Chennai. The system was predicted to continue its west-northwestward movement throughout the day, and by Friday night/Saturday morning, Mandous will likely make landfall over the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts, between Puducherry and Sriharikota. It is expected to maintain peak intensity with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph, until 11:30 pm IST. It is expected to cross the coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh at midnight Friday 9 December.

As per present weather indications, the cyclone will impact port operations at Ennore Port. Vessels which arrived the Port yesterday have not been berthed yet due to weather warnings. Ennore Port has advised vacating vessels from berth from 12:00 today.

The cyclone is also likely to impact operations at Karaikal Ports. Vessels which arrived yesterday have not been berthed.
