A ‘Low Pressure Area’ over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Wednesday (23 October), according to the India Meteorological Department.
It is very likely to intensify into a Depression by tomorrow morning (22 October) and into a cyclonic storm by 23 October, over east-central Bay of Bengal.
The Met department has predicted the cyclonic storm to hit the Odisha-West Bengal coast this week. The exact location of the landfall is not known, but it is expected to make a landfall over the coastal states of West Bengal and Odisha.
Odisha is likely to bear the maximum brunt of the cyclonic storm. Cyclone DANA - as the system will be called would spend maximum time on the Odisha coast leading to heavy to very heavy rainfall and high-speed wind up to 100 km/hour.
Under the impact of cyclone Dana, heavy rainfall between 20-30 cm is likely at places in Odisha, from 23 to 25 October. The weather agency has also warned of heavy rainfall at isolated places in north coastal Andhra Pradesh on 24 and 25 October.
It is likely to cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Islands during night of 24 October and early morning of 25 October, as a severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 100-110 km per hour gusting 120 km/hour.
Wind speeds off the Odisha-West Bengal coast is expected to reach 60 km/h from October 23, increasing to 120 km/h from 24 October night to 25 October morning.
Operations at Ports in the region continue as normal, with no disruptions reported.
