Cyclone Biparjoy makes landfall

Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall near Jakhau port in Abdasa taluka of Kutch between 6pm and 11pm today (16 June), battering the region with sustained wind speeds of 115-125kmph gusting to 140kmph and heavy rainfall, leaving a trail of destruction as it continues its landfall process over Pakistan and Rajasthan.

Since landfall, the storm has weakened into a cyclonic storm and will continue to weaken into a depression by tomorrow evening (17 June), according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

More than 12 hours landfall, Kutch is still reeling under its impact and gusting winds and rains are expected to will persist in Kutch at least until evening before the cyclone crosses over to Rajasthan.

Updates from ports in the region:

  • HPPL HAZIRA: Movements suspended, till further notice.
  • PLL DAHEJ: Movements suspended due to inclement weather.
  • NAVLAKHI: Port operations still suspended.
  • KANDLA: Port operations still suspended.
  • GPPL PIPAVAV: Port operations continue still suspended.
  • MUNDRA: Port operations still suspended.
  • RIL SIKKA: Force Majeure declared due to the cyclone. No berthing at Jetty/SPM.
  • MUMBAI: Vessel movements & cargo operations taking place, but anchorage operations affected due to no barge movements.

Signal GD-10 lowered and LCS-3 hoisted at Okha Port. Porbandar port lowered Signal No.9 and hoisted LCS-3.

The affected ports are expected to resume operations once weather and sea conditions are favourable.
