Cyclone Alert for Tropical Low 08U

13 Mar 2024 / Dampier & Port Hedland, Australia

The Port of Dampier is at Cyclone Alert Stage 2 – Prepare, and the Port of Port Hedland is at Cyclone Alert Stage 1 – Monitor, in anticipation of Tropical Low 08U intensifying up to and over the weekend.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology update at 0500 LT today (13 March), Tropical Low 08U is well to the southeast of Christmas Island and moving rapidly east-southeast. The large area of gales is expected to remain confined to its northern side until its eastward movement slows down. Gales will then likely extend to the southern side and it is expected to become a tropical cyclone on Friday.

08U will move closer to the Pilbara coast before turning towards the southwest on Friday. It will likely remain off the coast, but this is dependent on how far east it progresses before making its southward turn. There could be possible impacts along the Pilbara coast on the weekend or early next week, with some guidance suggesting a coastal crossing over the far western Pilbara is possible.

08U is forecast to reach category 2 intensity by late Friday, but there is a chance that it could peak at category 3 intensity over the weekend.

Shipping operations will continue as planned. Adjustments will be made by terminals based on prevalent and expected weather and swell conditions associated with the tropical system. Weather forecasts will continue to be monitored and further advice will be issued if there is a substantial change/escalation to the situation.
