The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has announced changes to the reduction offered for LNG carriers and surcharges for container ships transiting the Canal, as follows:
FOR LNG CARRIERS (AMENDED NORMAL LNG REBATE)
From 1 November 2021, the rebate granted to LNG carriers transiting the Suez Canal as per article two of circular (2/2015) is amended to be 15% of Suez Canal normal transit tolls rather than 25%.
FOR CONTAINER SHIPS (AMENDED TIERS SURCHARGES)
SCA announced changes on surcharges to be applied from 1 November 2021 for tiers on containers on weather-deck of container ships, as follows:
Southbound vessels:
Surcharges set by circular no. (2/2007) and levied on the tiers of containers situated on the weather-deck of container ships transiting the Suez Canal, to be amended as follows:
- Number of tiers of containers on weather-deck – 1
Levied surcharges from Suez Canal normal tolls - 2%
- Number of tiers of containers on weather-deck – 2
Levied surcharges from Suez Canal normal tolls - 4%
- Number of tiers of containers on weather-deck – 3
Levied surcharges from Suez Canal normal tolls - 6%
- Number of tiers of containers on weather-deck – 4
Levied surcharges from Suez Canal normal tolls - 8%
- Number of tiers of containers on weather-deck – 5
Levied surcharges from Suez Canal normal tolls - 15%
- Number of tiers of containers on weather-deck – 6
Levied surcharges from Suez Canal normal tolls - 19%
- Number of tiers of containers on weather-deck – 7
Levied surcharges from Suez Canal normal tolls - 21%
- Number of tiers of containers on weather-deck – 8
Levied surcharges from Suez Canal normal tolls - 23%
- Number of tiers of containers on weather-deck – 9
Levied surcharges from Suez Canal normal tolls - 25%

- For each additional tier of containers above the eleventh tier, the surcharge shall be increased by 2%.
