Canal water levels & vessel transits

14 Sep 2023 / Panama Canal, Panama

The Panama Canal is reducing the number of vessels transiting daily as Gatun Lake water levels are not optimum, due to the delayed rainy season.

The situation and resulting transit demand has heavily impacted waiting times, booking availability and auction costs.

An improvement in the lake levels is expected by the end of October.

The dry season is supposed to start mid/end December. If lake levels do not reach optimum levels while it is still rainy season, the same situation could be repeated next year.
