Canal transits update

02 Apr 2021 / Suez Canal, Egypt

Since the grounded container vessel blocking the Suez Canal was refloated and moved, operations have been underway to clear the backlog of waiting vessels. In the past four days (29 March-1 April), a total of 312 ships have transited.

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has advised the following arrangements for transits to clear ships waiting at Port Said and Suez today (2 April):

SOUTHBOUND CONVOY

  • At 0300 hours local time, about 21 ships entered the Canal, to wait at Great Bitter Lakes anchorages.
  • At 0900 hours local, about 5 ships were due to enter the Canal with free run to exit from Suez. Another 17 were scheduled to follow at 1100 hours local time.

NORTHBOUND CONVOY

  • At 0800 hours local time, about 14 ships entered the Canal, to wait at Great Bitter Lakes anchorages.
  • At 0900 hours local time, about 22 ships were due to enter the Canal with free run to exiting from Port Said.

Convoys in both directions are running round the clock until the backlog is cleared. Arrangements are subject to change from time-to-time by SCA in light of navigation considerations to speed up transiting for all waiting ships.
