Biparjoy to make landfall near Kutch

14 Jun 2023 / Gujarat, India

India is on full alert as Cyclone Biparjoy makes landfall tomorrow (15 June) near Kutch in Gujarat. The system has weakened into a very severe cyclonic storm.

The Indian Meterological Department (IMD) said Cyclone Biparjoy has “extensive damaging potential” and will make its landfall in Jakhau Port in Kutch district on 15 June. A Red Alert has been sounded as a cyclone warning for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts this morning.

With the cyclone approaching the coast, parts of Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains accompanied by strong winds. The intensity of rainfall would increase as the cyclone approaches the Gujarat coast, with isolated places in the districts of Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka and Jamnagar likely to witness extremely heavy rains. Rainfall is expected in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in the next four days.

After making landfall, Biparjoy will lose intensity and move as a depression over south-southwest Rajasthan before moving northeast.

The Cyclone is now completely detached from the monsoonal flow and will not have any negative impact on this year's monsoon or its performance.

Updates from Ports in the region:

HAZIRA:
Due to the prevalent weather conditions, wind speed and wave height will be well beyond the port’s safe marine operating limits. All inwards movements have been suspended until further notice. Cargo operations and outward vessel movements are continued at AHPL jetties with extreme caution.

NAVLAKHI:
Port operations are suspended.

KANDLA:
All incoming vessels advised/ instructed to wait outside the Gulf of Kutch area at a safe location and not allowed to enter the port limits as a precautionary measure due to the approaching cyclone. Berthing movements cancelled.

PIPAVAV:
Due to considerable improvement in the weather condition, berthing the 1st vessel has been brought forward to this afternoon/evening. Due the presence of some swell still within the port, there will be an exception though, the first vessel would be the largest & heaviest vessel awaiting at the port as she would be the most stable in the present conditions. Once it is established that all is well during the cargo operations on this vessel, port will open up the routine marine ops for the other vessels awaiting outside.
Opening up would be as follows:
1. GP4 first, thereafter GP3.
2. GP1 & UTCL cement carriers tomorrow, thereafter UTCL bulk carrier & tankers the last.
Berthing will only be head out over the next 24 hours, and thereafter the situation will be reviewed. Vessels to keep M/E on short notice, give additional mooring ropes and keep the offshore anchor underfoot.

MUNDRA:
Port operations still suspended. All vessels shifted to high seas.

MUMBAI:
Vessel movements remain normal, however cargo operation continue to be severely affected now due to continuous bad weather/strong wind/rolling/choppy sea.
