Biparjoy to make landfall

15 Jun 2023 / Gujarat, India

Cyclone Biparjoy is less than 180km from the Gujarat coast and its impending landfall process will start from evening and continue till midnight tonight (15 June), with anticipated heavy rainfall and storm surge leading to the evacuation of people living in vulnerable areas.

The very Severe Cyclonic Storm, which is moving northeastward in the Arabian Sea, is expected to make landfall near the Jakhau coast packing wind speeds reaching up to 150kmph, and then will traverse all along the Rann of Kutch up to Rajasthan. It will then enter Rajasthan's Kutch on June 16 in depressed form and will further weaken.

With the cyclone barrelling towards the coast, parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and possibly cause intense tidal waves of 5-6 metres in several parts especially, Gujarat and Mumbai.

Jakhau port, which has been shut for 5-6 days, will stay closed at least till the weekend or until conditions are favourable.
