Baltic Sea designated NOx Emission Control Area

07 Nov 2016 / Baltic Sea

The IMO has designated the Baltic Sea as a NOx Emission Control Area (NECA) from 1 January 2021 onwards.

The NECA regulation, which applies to all vessels built after 2021, requires to reduce NOx emissions by 80% compared to the present emission level. In practice this means new-builds have to be equipped with catalysts or use LNG fuels in order to comply with the regulation.
