19 May 2022 / Brazil
The Brazilian Navy has issued bad weather/sea conditions and strong wind warnings related to Subtropical Storm Yakecan for the following areas:
Yakecan yesterday (18 May) affected the coast of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states. Other coastal areas in the southern region and in the state of São Paulo were forecast to feel the effects caused of the system such as the increase in the intensity of the wind and waves in the regions. From today (19 May), the center of the storm is expected to be located over the southeastern portion of the BRAVO area, with an expected displacement to the southeast towards SOUTH OCEANIC area and a tendency to decrease its intensity throughout the day. The coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro and maritime areas of the state of Espírito Santo will see a gradual increase in wind speed and, consequently, waves.
Wind warnings were issued strong/stormy for ALFA, BRAVO, CHARLIE, DELTA, south of 20ºS, and SOUTH OCEANIC, south of 25ºS. As a result, warnings were issued over the ocean for heavy/high seas. There were also hangover warnings were issued that extend from Rio Grande/RS to Arraial do Cabo/RJ.
The Port Authority of Rio de Janeiro reinforces the repeated warnings of very strong winds and heavy seas in the maritime areas adjacent to the coasts of the South and Southeast regions.
It is recommended that all platforms, terminals, maritime clubs, fishing colonies, marinas, maritime support facilities and entities of the maritime community in general reinforce their security measures and are in a position to activate their respective plans for contingency or emergency in order to mitigate the possibilities of serious damages and accidents that affect the Safety of Waterway Traffic, which may cause Water Pollution or, mainly, threats to the Safety of Human Life at Sea.
Captains of larger ships are recommended to carry out a careful assessment of the need to navigate in the aforementioned areas during the period, as well as reinforcing the mooring and anchoring conditions.
The Maritime Authority strongly recommends that smaller vessels do not going out to sea during the period, but to seek well-sheltered areas and reinforce their mooring and anchoring conditions.
