Cyclone Asani lost strength rapidly between midnight and the early hours of today (12 May).
It crossed the Andhra coast between Machilipatnam and Narsapur between 5.30 and 7.30pm as a deep depression with a wind speed of 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph.
According to the weather department, Asani will weaken into a depression and emerge into the Bay of Bengal in the Yanam-Kakinada region in the state. The cyclone is likely to hover around the same region and weaken further into a Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area during the next 12 hours.
Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail off Odisha coast during next 12 hours. Light to moderate rainfall is expected on Thursday along coastal Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal & Odisha.
